In 2024, we were called upon by Maui Electric-Molokai to assist their sub-contractor installers in removing a recyclable 60-ton electrical transformer and replacing with a new unit shipped from California. We were required to dispatch our two largest capacity forklifts together with other equipment and more importantly our 50-ton lowboy trailer to be used in the haul of both transformers. This project required extreme expertise in removing the old unit and replacing with the new because there are no cranes nor forklifts on Molokai equipped to handle the weight and versatility of the transformer. Rather, each unit had to be “jacked” inch-by-inch just enough to drive the lowboy underneath the unit, lowered and then safely transported to and from the remote project site. The same “building block” approach was instituted at each site and for each unit. A three-day process and Team Makoa were there: start to finish!
Two of our awesome clients needed a very dear statue of art shipped to New Mexico. A specialty item requiring expertise in packing and crating. We believe in the very simple principle that “what we ship arrives in the same condition as when it leaves Molokai”. It is very important to us because we have seen freight arrive in battered condition and if someone at the origin end of the process had taken the care to properly protect the item, it would be well received. Very earlier in our history, we had a great customer who had a customed-made tile coffee table she had carried with her for years. Shipped it to Molokai and upon arrival, the table was completely shattered. So was our client’s heart!
Not the only plane wreckage Makoa has been a team player in the clean up…but the most recent. A cargo plane wreck happened at take off and luckily, there were minor personal injuries. The plane failed to have the same fate! The carnage per FAA regulations, had to be gathered and loaded into a 40’ shipping container and forwarded to Honolulu for inspection and recycled. Makoa was there start to finish: from loading and securing the load to managing the final destination delivery in Honolulu involving peer trucking companies to assist.
